Totum works best on an up-to-date computer. Out-of-date Windows or graphics drivers are one of the most common causes of problems such as cameras not being detected, the app crashing or a poor picture. Before a course or after any issue, work through the steps below.

Before you start

  • You may need administrator rights on the computer. On hospital or work computers, ask your IT department to help.

Steps

  1. For Windows, do the following:

    1. Press the Windows key and type "Check for updates".

    2. Click "Check for updates" and go through the update process (you may need to restart your machine).

  2. For graphics drivers, it depends on the graphics card you have in your machine (if you have one). Typically, we use Nvidia cards:

    1. Launch the Nvidia App. If it is not installed, do the following:

      • Download the Nvidia App from their website and install for Windows.

      • Install the Nvidia App application.

    2. Check for the latest drivers and install and restart the PC if required.

Once the updates are complete, relaunch Totum and test the camera again.
If you have another manufacturer's card, please go to the computer manufacturer's website (for example AMD, Intel or your laptop maker), install it and restart.

  3. Set Totum to use high-performance graphics - This ensures that Totum is running on your graphics card instead of the processor. To ensure this, do the following:

    • Press the Windows key and type "Settings" and press Enter.

    • In the Settings page, select System.

    • Then select Display.

    • Then move to the Graphics page.

    • Scroll down or search for TotumNative and open the dropdown.

    • Switch the GPU Preference setting to High Performance.
Note: This may also show up as the name of your graphics card in brackets.

  4. Plug in your Inovus hardware before opening Totum - Connected the hardware directly to the computer rather than through a USB hub.

  5. Open Totum and test an activity.

Still stuck?

Contact support with your Windows version, the Totum version number (if you have this available) and a description or photo of any error message.

Additional: installing the C++ redistributable

Totum may need Microsoft's Visual C++ Redistributable to run correctly. Therefore, follow the steps below to understand how to install it.

  1. Download the installer from Microsoft.

  2. Open your Downloads folder and run the vc_redist.x64.exe file that just downloaded.

  3. Tick to agree to the licence terms and select Install.

  4. If Windows asks for permission, select Yes (note, you may need admin permissions to install this program).

  5. When it has finished, close the installer.

  6. Restart your computer, then open Totum.
